This Week's Quote

Rather than accept his defeat in the 2020 presidential election, President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results and prevent the lawful transfer of power.

One of Us?

I just don't know how to feel about the accusations against Rep. Lauren Boebert that she had sexual relationships with three of her staffers, two of whom are female.

I mean, we already know the pillar of Christian MAGA virtue has stilettos of clay. I'll never forget the Colorado Republican getting tossed from a Denver production of "Beetlejuice" for, among other things, fondling her date.

Boebert's sledgehammer homophobia and transphobia would make Anita Bryant proud. This doesn't preclude the possibility that she muff dives on the side, but I for one find it hard to believe.

I do know this:  If Boebert is part of the queer community, we have got to raise our standards.

I am the code.

Ballroom-obsessed Donald Trump arguing that no building codes apply to White House construction, so the architect should stop fretting over a shortage of emergency exit routes and fire-containment measures

So Restrained

Image:  Facebook

In his speech at the United Nations General Assembly today, Donald Trump told world leaders he was weighing whether to "annihilate" Iran and drive it "into hell."

The verbal histrionics from President Loose Canon made me think of the 1960 General Assembly when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev took off his shoe and banged it on the table.

If Trump tries that, he'll use a golf shoe.

Name Game

Image:  Facebook

Forget about the Nobel Peace Prize snub. Donald Trump has now suffered a truly excruciating indignity.

An American city is renaming its airport after . . . someone else.

Music City has begun the process of renaming Nashville International Airport after Dolly Parton, Tennessee's own all-around goddess.

The temerity. The effrontery. To soothe his ego, I expect Trump to rush around and find something of cultural significance to name after himself.

Be prepared for the Donald Trump Alamo.

The Great Discombobulation

Image:  Facebook

Donald Trump's recent sulky move to change Lake Ontario to Lake America reminded me of something I learned in sixth grade that has stayed with me all these years.

The way to remember the names of all five Great Lakes is to use an acronym. HOMES stands for Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.

Thanks to our leader's peevishness, that no longer works. HAMES? Please. I'd have forgotten that before the start of seventh grade.

Now that I look at the letter change forced by President Petulant, however, I do see one variation that is painfully apt:  SHAME.

Goodbye, Gloria

Image:  Facebook

Well, I'm in pain. I just learned one of my personal heroes has died.

I first heard Gloria Steinem speak when I was in high school, approximately 6,000 years ago. Her guts, her humor, her ability to voice what hadn't been voiced before—all of it made a deep impression on me.

In tribute, I give her the last word:  "The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off."

I served on Senate Armed Services for 8 years and as chair or ranking member of the Personnel and Readiness subcommittee. I have never witnessed more inept management of the brave men and women who serve our country. He is intimidated by competence and retreats to ginning up culture wars instead of soberly attending to the vital work of our national defense and the health and well-being of our fighting force.
