And He's Off

The murder by an Afghan of a member of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., has freed Donald Trump to launch into xenophobic overdrive.

In other words, he got an early Christmas present.

"I will permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the U.S. system to fully recover, terminate all of the millions of Biden illegal admissions, including those signed by Sleepy Joe Biden’s Autopen, and remove anyone who is not a net asset to the United States," Trump posted late on Thanksgiving, a holiday that celebrates immigration.

Our leading nativist also said the government would deport any foreign national who's "non-compatible with Western Civilization." Trump himself isn't compatible with any form of civilization. Letting him define Western civilization is like handing the job to a combination of Al Capone and Liberace.

His jingoistic hysterics are meant to feed his base, in the hope that while they froth and seethe they won't notice how prices continue to rise. Trump's approval ratings have cratered to a record low. His frenzied bigotry will likely boost his numbers.

For a while. Until Christmas shoppers realize that their budget can no longer stretch to a Marvel Spider-Man VenomVersus Spider-Man Liquid Shifter Action Figure with Accessories.

Sinking to the Occasion

I hope you read the heartfelt Thanksgiving message from a former president of these United States. It was so touching. Or touched.

At 2:00 a.m. on the national holiday when Americans go to great lengths to gather with family and friends, and to express gratitude, Donald Trump captured the spirit of the day when he posted on Truth Social "Happy Thanksgiving to ALL," and then dove into an expansive and unhinged rant against his enemies, calling New York Attorney General Letitia James "racist and incompetent" and Judge Arthur Engoron a "Psycho."

Such class. Such dignity. Such projection.

Altogether it was a sublimely on-point holiday offering to a nation from a leader—as long as the nation is Freedonia and the leader is Groucho Marx.

Turkey Day 2023

Image by William Adams from Pixabay

It's been a strange Thanksgiving.

For the last several years, I've spent the holiday with friends about a half hour away. They always put on a sumptuous spread. Today I arrived to discover the 88-year-old matriarch had just been struck with Covid, so the family gave me a feast to go, and I drove back home and ate it in front of the TV.

I was distinctly sorry we couldn't have our traditional gabfest. But one part of the annual tradition I was actually happy to miss. A semi-regular attendee at these gatherings is a fella who works for a conservative organization. That's trying enough, but the capper is he seems to be the only one who doesn't know he's gay.

I fear that one of these Thanksgivings I'll whack him with a drumstick and yell, "Wake up and smell the cranberry!"
